Loving Our Neighbors

"The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective." James 5:16

Praying HandsPrayers offered to God are focused on neighbors or those around you. It’s talking to God about your neighbors before you talk to your neighbors about God.

Prayer Walking
It’s taking our prayers outside the walls of our church buildings and putting feet to our prayers. Walking as we pray will help us pray clearer because we will see things that we can’t see otherwise. As you walk down your street, you will quickly become aware of the needs and realities of your neighborhood. It’s being on the scene without making one!  Prayer-walkers should seek to meet neighbors and be friendly.

You can walk alone, or you can form a small group of two or three. Just take a walk with your spouse and kids and silently pray for your neighbors.

As people get used to seeing you they will be more willing to talk with you and share their prayer needs. Walking your area regularly is best.

Safety tips:
As the Lord leads you, you may want to consider these:

  • Use common sense
  • Men relate to men
  • Women relate to women
  • Keep it outside (sidewalk or front yard)
  • Do things in pairs
  • Use caution as you love your neighbors

Always ask the Holy Spirit to pray through you. He will give you the right words to pray and a prayer strategy for your street. As you walk your street or targeted areas, opportunities to pray with someone or tell the Good News about Jesus Christ may occur while you’re having an ordinary conversation with someone.

I believe the greatest prayer we need to be praying is found in Luke 10:2. Jesus said to the 70 that He had sent out two-by-two to the cities where He himself would come: "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." If the laborers are going to go forth into the Lord’s harvest, that means we are going to have to get out of our buildings and into the community.
